X header ideas that use your own people

Most X headers are a stock photo, a slogan or a flat colour. The header is the biggest image on your profile, and it can say something only you can say: who you spend your time on X with. Here are 30 ways to do that, grouped by the idea behind them. Each one is an Orbit Cards design, drawn from one read of your account.

Just want a header with your own photo, name and bio, without signing in? Paste your handle into the X header maker.

Before you pick: what X does to a header

An X header is 1500×500 pixels, the size X’s help centre recommends. Your profile photo covers the bottom-left corner, and some phones trim the top and bottom, so only a band through the middle is always seen. Put the important part there. Every Orbit Cards header leaves the photo corner empty and seats your closest people in that middle band, so you don't have to measure anything.

Crowds: as many faces as you talk with

If you reply a lot, a crowd header shows it. Spectrum sorts a hundred faces into a rainbow by photo colour. Mosaic gives your top ten big square tiles and everyone else a small one. Bloom spirals out from your #1, and Bubbles keeps fewer, bigger faces for a smaller circle.

Scenes: your people somewhere

A scene turns faces into a picture. Skyline puts them in the lit windows of a city at dusk, Garden in the middle of flowers, Stadium in the front rows of the stands, and Map pins on a dotted world map.

Boards and signs: a joke people get

These use handles as well as faces. Departures spells your people out on a split-flap flight board, Ticker lists them as stock tickers that are all up, Comic puts them in speech-bubble panels, and Yearbook prints first names under class photos.

Prints, and a year apart

Polaroids pins instant photos to a corkboard with handles written underneath, Film runs three film strips across, and Record shelf files everyone as album sleeves. Then & now is the odd one out: last year's people in sepia next to this year's in colour.

How to choose

Start from your account. A big, busy circle suits a crowd; a handful of close regulars suits Bubbles or Constellation, where each face is large. If your account has a theme, a board or a scene carries it. Every header comes in three looks (From their photos, Night and Paper), so match the look to your profile photo. Then change it now and then: a header with this month's people stays true.

Questions

What size should an X header be?

An X header should be 1500×500 pixels. X shows the full width on the web and may trim the top and bottom on phones, and your profile photo covers part of the bottom-left. Orbit Cards draws every header at 1500×500 with the photo corner kept clear and the important part in the middle band.

Do these work as a Twitter header?

Yes. Every Orbit Cards header works as a Twitter header, because Twitter is now X and the header is the same 1500×500 image it always was. Download it as PNG, JPG or WebP, open Edit profile on X, choose the header image and upload the file. Nothing else changes.

How often should I change my X header?

Change your X header whenever your circle changes, which for most active accounts is every month or two. On Monthly, Orbit Cards reads your X again on the 1st of every month, so a header showing the people you talk with now is ready in the Studio and one download away.

What should I include in an X header?

An X header should say who you are and who you're with: your name and a line about what you do, a launch or a milestone, or the faces of the people you talk with most. Keep the bottom-left corner clear for your profile photo and put the important part in the middle band that phones never crop.

Can I reuse my X header designs?

Yes. After a read, every header design stays open in the Studio for your 30 days, so you can download it again in another look, colour or format as often as you like. On Monthly, each new read on the 1st redraws the same designs with the people you talk with now.
